There’s a new name in the mastitis tube market that’s cutting today’s common five-day treatment to just three, once-per-day treatments. PolyMastTM (hetacillin potassium), from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI) is available exclusively through veterinary prescription and is labeled for the treatment of mild to moderate mastitis in a once-per-day formulation for a period of three days.
A peer-reviewed, head-to-head trial compared the efficacy of hetacillin potassium (the active ingredient in PolyMast) to ceftiofur hydrochloride, another once-per-day mastitis treatment currently on the market that is commonly administered for five to eight days. The trial concluded that three days of PolyMast treatment was just as effective as five days of this product against common mastitis pathogens.1
“Because PolyMast is proven just as effective in three treatments vs. five of other current products, dairy producers can confidently treat mastitis in their herd without using more antibiotics than necessary,” said Dr. Linda Tikofsky, Professional Services Veterinarian at BIVI.
The once-per-day treatment protocol of PolyMast works seamlessly on dairy operations that employ a treatment manager for only one shift per day. In addition, PolyMast has a milk withhold of 72 hours after the last treatment – putting milk back in the tank faster than the common practice of treating mastitis once daily for five consecutive days. PolyMast also minimizes the amount of time cows spend in the hospital pen and fewer antibiotics are used without sacrificing cure rates.
