Hope for youth with disabilities in South America

  • More Potential

All over the world, people with disabilities face barriers that make it difficult for them to participate in everyday life. Barriers present not only as a lack of accessibility or of assistive technologies, but also as prevalent negative attitudes such as stigma, stereotyping, discrimination, and prejudice. Our Making More Health (MMH) partner organizations from Argentina and Colombia, Andar and Fedar, are sharing their knowledge to help overcome these barriers.

Two organizations, one goal

In Argentina, Andar has a successful track record of over 25 years working for the inclusion of young people with disabilities. One of their programs is a catering service that employs people with disabilities as cooks and waiters. It is a thriving social business that has grown in the light of a collaboration project with Boehringer.

In Colombia, Fedar stimulates the development of children with cognitive disabilities. They use the arts and contact with nature as a pedagogical and therapeutic tool, with the purpose of building dignified life projects. The future of these children is a concern because as they become older, they express the need for further development. They too want to get jobs, learn new skills, and lead an independent life.

Sharing knowledge to empower people

To address these needs, Boehringer’s MMH team in South America had an idea: Why not pair up both organizations and let them share their knowledge? Fedar could learn from the Andar experience and start its own local social business. Two people from Andar were invited to visit the organization in Colombia to share their experience, train the local team, and provide inspiration to the Fedar families.

The trip was a truly rewarding experience: The students at Fedar not only learned about the everyday work at a catering service. They were also able to gain firsthand experience by preparing a full food service as they would do for a paying customer. The Fedar team developed ideas to promote their coffee business by offering a catering service with a coffee tasting experience - served by their own students.

Looking towards an independent future

This inspiring partnership created a positive ripple effect in all directions. The students in Colombia were excited about the possibility to work, make a living out of it, and thus become more independent. And the Fedar families expressed their enthusiasm about the project, thankful for the opportunity - and hopeful for a brighter future for their children.
