Antibodies - proteins that bind to antigens so they can be identified, targeted, and eliminated - are a key part of the body’s immune response. 

Monoclonal vs. polyclonal

A monoclonal antibody (mAb) is an antibody derived from a single parent white blood cell (B-cell) which specifically binds to the same identifying factor on the antigen – the same epitope. Polyclonal antibodies, on the other hand, are derived from several different B-cell lineages and bind to multiple epitopes. Monoclonal antibodies are identical copies and can be manufactured in vitro by fermentation, in large quantities with consistent quality.

A lasting solution

And, when a clone with the right properties is created, it can be stored in a cell bank, allowing the manufacture of monoclonal antibodies to be repeated for decades.
