Improving primary care in Alberta’s Indigenous Populations

Improving primary care in Alberta’s Indigenous Populations

A partnership between Boehringer Ingelheim Canada, the University Hospital Foundation and the Government of Alberta, known as the Alberta Boehringer Ingelheim Collaborative (ABIC), is helping to improve primary care in Alberta’s Indigenous Populations by increasing the number of community
members with emergency response medical capabilities.

The exciting initiative offers certified training programs at no cost to community members of the Metis Settlements of Alberta, including from Buffalo Lake, East Prairie, Elizabeth, Fishing Lake, Gift Lake, Kikino, Paddle Prairie and Peavine. The goals are to increase the number of community members with
training, provide career growth opportunities, and improve emergency medical response capabilities in the Metis Settlements. Training includes education materials, mentorship, job placement, a dynamic learning environment and the opportunity to join the Alberta Health Services Medical First Response Partnership.

The project is part of the overall Metis Settlements Primary Care Initiative in the Metis Settlements, which, in partnership with the Metis Settlements Health Board, is led by Alberta Health Services (AHS) North Zone Operations with support from the AHS Indigenous Wellness Core, Innovation Evidence Evaluation & Impact, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Indigenous Talent Acquisition teams.

The collaboration is an example of how delivering innovative solutions can improve health equity, recruit more Indigenous professionals into healthcare and increase sustainable healthcare to improve patient outcomes. Learn more about - ABIC (Research Competition Winners – Pillar 3).
